What is Preciсe Nail?
Preciсe Nail is a sliding metal rod that is implanted into the medullary canal of the femur or tibia and is secured with several internal screws. Then, a fully controlled osteotomy (bone cutting surgery) is performed at a pre-marked location.
The initial length of the rod is individualized for each patient and determined by the orthopedic surgeon. During the therapy, this length can be increased on average up to 8 cm. The gradual sliding of the rod occurs at a rate of a quarter millimeter four times a day. The rod is activated using a remote control, through a special computerized system that comes into contact with the skin of the limb.
As a result, rare-earth magnets in the system create a magnetic field around the thigh or shin that affects the rod. The repulsion of the bipolar magnets causes rotational movements of the gears that slide the telescopic rod. This leads to gradual stretching of the soft tissues and the formation of new bone tissue. This process is quite slow, so bone growth occurs naturally and does not violate biological principles.
The sliding is performed at home, and the progress is monitored only during visits to the clinic.
