In Israel, one of the leading countries in clinically addressing weight issues, two main types of surgeries are performed: gastric banding and gastric bypass.
Gastric Banding
During gastric banding, a special silicone ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach. As a result, the amount of food consumed decreases due to the feeling of fullness caused by the band. Weight loss occurs.
The banding procedure is performed under general anesthesia using laparoscopy. The operation is reversible and minimally invasive.
After the operation, the patient spends a maximum of one day in the hospital, and the operation itself lasts no more than half an hour to an hour. After the band is removed, the stomach returns to its original shape. Patients who undergo this operation lose between 50 to 70% of excess weight within the first 12-15 months.
Gastric Bypass:
As a result of this operation, the upper part of the stomach is severed, creating a pouch with a capacity of up to 50 ml. Food takes a shorter path, practically bypassing the small intestine. As a result of this operation, the quantity and absorption of food decrease, leading to weight loss. An advanced technology used in Israel is that during the operation, access to the stomach is achieved through the mouth. A special gastroscope staples the stomach tissues together. As a result - the size of the stomach is reduced.
After bariatric surgeries, absorption of copper and vitamins in the small intestine may decrease. Neurological symptoms and anemia may occur. Therefore, patients are advised to replenish the deficiency of these essential substances by taking micronutrients and vitamins daily.
