A biopsy of the neck tissues is performed surgically for histological examination of suspicious formations – tumours in the neck area, lymph nodes.
Surgical Biopsy
This is the next step in diagnosis after a fine needle aspiration biopsy. A pathological formation of the thyroid gland or lymph node is surgically removed partially or completely and subjected to histological examination for oncology. The operation is performed under local anesthesia. The total duration of the operation is up to 1 hour, and the patient stays in the hospital department for 1 day.
Types of Surgical Neck Biopsy
- Closed surgical biopsy is performed with a thin puncture needle. This method is quick to perform and minimally invasive.
- Open biopsy of the neck area can be partial or total. In partial biopsy, a section of the tumour without clear boundaries is excised.
Total biopsy is performed when the size of the tumour allows for complete removal based on size and anatomical location. The operation is always performed in a hospital setting.
- A new minimally invasive method, actively being implemented in medical practice – endoscopic biopsy, allows for the most informative execution of the procedure.
