Surgeons of the Top Ichilov Clinic, who have successfully performed lumpectomy on thousands of patients

The clinic employs sought-after, renowned surgeons who have mastered new techniques and methods for performing lumpectomy, which are as effective as the more radical surgical intervention of mastectomy.

Lumpectomy: At Top Ichilov, everything will be done to preserve your breast

Lumpectomy at Top Ichilov is performed using organ-sparing technologies. The surgical techniques allow for the removal of the tumour within healthy tissue of the breast. The use of modern surgical instruments not only maximally preserves the breast but also avoids the risks of significant blood loss associated with outdated lumpectomy methods.

Stages of the Operation:

This organ-sparing intervention involves the removal of the tumour within healthy tissue. The amount of tissue removed by the clinic's surgeons is determined based on the histological nature of the tumour, its size, and the histological analysis data obtained during the operation;

The operation is performed under general anesthesia;

  • The location and shape of the incision depend on the tumour's location and are chosen to leave an optimal cosmetic effect. This serves as a significant psychological factor for faster postoperative recovery of the patient. For tumours located in the central quadrant of the breast, the access is either arcuate or periareolar. For tumours located in the lower quadrant, a radial incision is made;
  • During the operation, the surgeon palpates the cancerous tumour and excises it along with a small amount of healthy tissue. The excision is carried down to the fascia of the pectoral muscle;
  • The excised areas are frozen and immediately sent to the laboratory for microscopic examination of the surgical margin. If cancer cells are absent in the margin areas, the excision has been successful, and the tumour has been completely removed;
  • In some cases, axillary lymph nodes are additionally removed. Often, the so-called "sentinel" lymph node, which is closest to the tumour, is removed. The absence of cancer cells in it indicates the absence of metastasis.

The operation usually takes no more than 1-3 hours. Two hours after its completion, the patient is transferred to the surgical department, where she remains under observation for 1-2 days.

As an independent treatment method, lumpectomy at the Top Ichilov Clinic is applied for small tumour sizes.

Surgical treatment of breast cancer, of which lumpectomy is one type, is the primary method of treating this disease at the Top Ichilov Clinic. It is often combined with a course of postoperative radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and the use of biological and hormonal medications. A comprehensive approach to treating breast cancer increases the chances of success.

After discharge, specialists at the Top Ichilov Clinic will provide comprehensive recommendations regarding the further treatment necessary for the patient who has undergone lumpectomy. Individualizing the approach for each patient and the high quality of medical care have been and remain an integral part of the work at the Top Ichilov Clinic.

The lumpectomy operation has been and remains the primary method of combating the development and spread of cancer in the breast. Young women who do not undergo preventive examinations by a mammologist automatically fall into the risk group for breast cancer and may later undergo this operation. It is not very common, but breast cancer statistics show that approximately 1% of patients with this diagnosis are men.

Lumpectomy at Top Ichilov: Diagnostic Measures Before the Operation

Immediately before the operation, the patient must undergo all necessary diagnostic procedures. These studies at the Top Ichilov Clinic will allow for the most accurate determination of the tumour's location, size, and the selection of the optimal treatment plan for breast cancer.

The main volume of diagnostic procedures in preparation for lumpectomy includes:

Tumour imaging methods:

  • CT;
  • PET;
  • Magnetic resonance imaging;
  • Mammological examination;
  • Ultrasound examination;
  • Consultation with the leading mammologist of the clinic;

As well as:

  • Tissue biopsy of the tumour;
  • Fluorography;
  • Complete blood count and chemical analyses, blood for electrolytes, coagulation, liver function tests;
  • ECG.

The diagnostic program before the lumpectomy operation at the Top Ichilov Clinic is carried out in strict accordance with modern diagnostic protocols and is characterized by optimal timing and the acquisition of accurate results.
