Joint Replacement (Endoprosthetics) in Israel

Professor Ilya PekarskyProfessor Ilya Pekarsky

leading orthopedist

Joint replacement is required for many patients for various reasons. Most often, this is due to age-related changes, but it can also be caused by injuries, metabolic disorders, the result of an unbalanced diet, and insufficient physical activity. Joint endoprosthetics in Israel is one of the most developed and promising areas of medicine. The surgery is performed using modern innovative technologies, minimally invasive techniques, and 3D modeling of the artificial joint. It is possible to perform prosthetics using a highly precise robotic system.

Statistics show that on average, 1 in 1000 people undergoes endoprosthetic surgery, whereas not long ago, such procedures were associated with a high probability of complications and were rarely prescribed. For instance, 30 years ago, the surgery was successfully performed in approximately 65-70% of cases, while now more than 95% of patients are satisfied with the joint prosthetics performed in Israeli clinics. The surgeries are conducted by highly qualified orthopedic surgeons, and after a short period, the patient can return to an active life. The cost of endoprosthetics in Israel is lower than in clinics in Europe and the USA.

When is endoprosthetics indicated

Joint Endoprosthetics
In most cases, hip and knee joints are replaced.
Hip joint prosthetics is indicated in the following diseases:

  • aseptic necrosis of the femoral head;
  • fracture of the neck of the femur in elderly people;
  • rheumatoid arthritis and polyarthritis;
  • arthroses;
  • bone neoplasms;
  • injuries;
  • Bechterew's disease.

Knee joint replacement is required in cases of:

  • rheumatic pathologies;
  • injuries;
  • arthritis;
  • arthroses.

How the surgery is performed

How the surgery is performed
Joint Endoprosthetics
In Israel, prosthetics of the following joints is performed:

  • hip;
  • knee;
  • shoulder;
  • elbow;
  • wrist;
  • ankle.

Hip and knee joint replacements are most commonly required.
Hip joint prosthetic surgery
Endoprosthetics in Israeli clinics is performed by highly qualified doctors, using modern techniques and prostheses made individually for each patient. During the surgery, the pathologically altered parts of the hip joint are replaced with metal, plastic, or ceramic prostheses. Depending on the prosthetic technique, the transplants are fixed under pressure (Press Fit) or with the help of special glue (Bone Cement). The postoperative period is short, and the patient does not require a long stay in the clinic.
Before the surgical intervention, comprehensive diagnostics are conducted, including:

  • general and biochemical blood and urine tests;
  • X-ray examination of the joint;
  • MRI of the hip joint;
  • laboratory examination of joint fluid (conducted if the patient has rheumatism).

The type of prosthesis is selected depending on the nature of the changes in the joint and the cause of the pathology. The surgical intervention is performed under general anesthesia (less often under epidural anesthesia) and takes about 2 hours. The operation is carried out in several stages.

  1. Access to the joint is obtained through an incision of about 20 cm, with minimal damage to soft tissues. Preparation for the installation of the prosthesis is carried out — removal of joint cartilage and destroyed bone parts.
  2. Installation and fixation of the prosthesis, consisting of a cup, stem, and head, made according to the individual sizes of the patient.
  3. Treating the wound with antiseptic solution, suturing soft tissues and skin.

The day after the procedure, the patient can get up, after 7 days he is discharged from the clinic, and approximately 4-5 weeks later he returns to a fully active life.
Knee joint replacement surgery
Since the knee joint provides oscillatory movements and rotation, its surgical replacement must be performed with maximum precision. Israeli specialists try to prosthetize only the pathologically altered parts whenever possible; however, in some cases, a complete joint replacement is necessary. The surgery is performed under general or epidural anesthesia.
The prosthesis is made according to the sizes obtained during the preoperative X-ray examination. The knee joint endoprosthesis made using modern technologies allows bending of the knee at an angle of 155°. Additionally, orthopedic surgeons use the innovative Signature Knee technology — individual selection of the prosthesis and virtual construction of the surgical scheme using computer visualization. This technology improves the performance of the artificial joint, reduces its wear, and minimizes the risk of complications.
During the surgical intervention, the upper part of the tibia is replaced with a combined metal-plastic implant, while the femoral fragment of the prosthesis is made of a metal alloy. The endoprosthesis is fixed using Bone Cement or the modern Press Fit method. The advantage of the latest cementless fixation technique is that bone tissue gradually grows into the inner part of the prosthesis over time.
For two days after the surgery, the patient remains in the orthopedic department of the clinic. Pain relief medications are prescribed, and special sleeves are placed on his calves to prevent thrombosis. The day after the prosthetic procedure, the patient is allowed to walk, and on the third day, he is discharged.

The cost of endoprosthetics in Israel

Joint EndoprostheticsThe cost of installing the prosthesis includes the price of comprehensive diagnostics, modeling, and the manufacturing of the prosthesis itself, as well as the surgical procedure of endoprosthetics. For patients, it is significant that in Israeli clinics, the price is substantially lower than in American and European medical centers of comparable levels. To find out exactly how much prosthetics cost in Israel, it is necessary to fill out the form on the website of the chosen clinic, wait for a call from the medical coordinator, and receive a consultation from him.
Advantages of endoprosthetics in Israel
Joint prosthetics in Israel has several advantages:

  • diagnostics and prosthetic procedures are conducted by world-class orthopedic surgeons;
  • use of prostheses manufactured using the latest technologies;
  • use of the Signature Knee program for individual computer 3D modeling of the endoprosthesis;
  • performing endoprosthetic surgeries using minimally invasive techniques, ensuring minimal postoperative complications and rapid recovery;
  • the surgical treatment scheme and the operation itself are performed using the NAVIO system, under the control of a surgical robot;
  • application of the latest modern techniques to shorten the rehabilitation period, individual selection of a set of recovery exercises allows the patient to quickly return to an active life.
  • Arthrosis
  • Bechterew's disease
  • Coxarthrosis of the hip joint
  • Treatment of the ankle joint
  • Treatment of the knee joint
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee joints
  • Hallux valgus

Advantages of joint prosthetics in Israeli clinics

  • Israel has developed many unique approaches to restoring the functionality of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue.
  • Effective measures are taken here to unload the joint, including weight loss programs, selection of individual special devices and orthopedic shoes, surgeries to reduce the load on the joint and spine by correcting limb length.
  • Extremely effective training complexes have been developed in Israel, allowing for rapid strengthening of the muscular apparatus.
  • Patients coming to Israel for joint replacement surgery receive premium-class medical care from world-class specialists.
  • This country actively develops medical tourism and provides maximum comfort and opportunities for tourists arriving for treatment from other countries.

Here, they guarantee an individual approach and provide complete medical and financial information regarding the surgical procedure and related activities.
