Treatment of Osteoporosis in Israel

Osteoporosis is a disease of bone tissue that has a systemic nature, progressing steadily, affecting the bones of the skeleton, disrupting their density and composition. This dangerous disease, if left untreated, can lead to disability.

Causes

Women and elderly individuals are most susceptible to osteoporosis. The causes of its occurrence include heredity, a sedentary lifestyle, irregular menstruation, low weight or height, excessively thin weak bones, the use of certain types of medications and hormonal agents. Factors affecting bone health include alcohol consumption, smoking, insufficient dietary calcium, vitamin D3, dairy products, a high intake of meat, and caffeine.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis in its early stages is asymptomatic, which makes it dangerous. However, there are some signs characteristic of osteoporosis – these include tooth decay and periodontal disease, weak nails, pain in the thoracic spine when staying in one position for a long time (for example, sitting), postural disorders, and a decrease in height.

Diagnosis of Osteoporosis in Israel

Considering the asymptomatic course of osteoporosis, it may be detected at early stages through fractures. Diagnosis in Israel is carried out using X-rays and osteodensitometry, tomography, and ultrasound densitometry. X-rays will not show the presence of osteoporosis in the early stages. The most common and effective diagnostic method is DEXA (bone densitometry). Biochemical markers are also used in the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Treatment of Osteoporosis in Israel

Osteoporosis cannot be completely cured - only improvement in the condition of the skeletal bones is possible. This is a long and complex set of measures aimed at eliminating the causes of the disease, alleviating pain, and pharmacologically restoring bone tissue. Treatment lasts for years. Medications that stop destructive processes (bisphosphonates, natural estrogens, and calcitonin) and medications that participate in bone formation (bioflavonoids, vitamin D3, calcium, fluoride, and strontium salts) are used in treatment. Both in treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, a special diet is necessary (rich in greens, dairy products, fish, and cabbage). Regular walking at least 3 times a week is essential to strengthen bones. A healthy lifestyle should be maintained, and harmful factors affecting bone structure should be eliminated.
