Telangiectasia is primarily a cosmetic issue. It is also referred to as "vascular stars" because a network of small vessels, capillaries, is clearly visible on the skin. Women are more prone to telangiectasia. The vascular network most often manifests on the face and legs, less frequently on the neck and décolletage area.
Causes
The manifestation of the vascular network on the face is inherited, meaning it is a genetic particular sensitivity of the vessels. On the legs, vascular stars may indicate impaired blood circulation or varicose veins. An increased level of sex hormone (estrogen) can also cause telangiectasia, which is why it appears in pregnant women and those taking hormonal medications. Other causes of telangiectasia may include various diseases, including chronic skin conditions, prolonged exposure to solar radiation, and carcinogens.
Symptoms
Depending on the origin of the vascular stars and individual characteristics, telangiectasia is classified as linear, located on the cheeks and nose, tree-like, or spider-like. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia affects the tongue, nasal mucosa, and fingertips. A severe form of this condition manifests on the surface of the larynx, internal organs, and even the brain.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing telangiectasia in Israel is performed by a physician based on external examination. Sometimes, additional examinations are conducted to identify any vascular pathologies.
Treatment
In Israel, sclerotherapy is successfully used in the treatment of telangiectasia – the introduction of a medication through a thin needle that affects the damaged vessel, which then adheres together. For women on the face, electrocoagulation is used – touching each enlarged vessel with a very fine needle, affecting it with high-frequency electric current, which causes the vessels to constrict. Effective removal of telangiectasia is possible using laser coagulation, where the laser beam selectively affects the vessels without touching healthy tissues.
Prevention
It is impossible to avoid the congenital feature of vessel weakness. However, it is necessary to protect them from aggressive external factors – from wind, cold, and direct sunlight. One should avoid alcohol and hot food. It is important to eat a balanced diet and undergo medication treatment prescribed by a physician aimed at strengthening the vessels.
