Treatment of Spasticity in Israel

Spasticity is a condition characterized by excessively high muscle tone over an extended period. It is often observed in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis in the later stages of the disease. Spasticity causes difficulties in patient movement, and muscle spasms in the lower limbs often make independent mobility impossible. In addition to limiting motor functions, the condition of spasticity is accompanied by pain syndrome and frequent involuntary contractions of muscle fibers.

At the Top Ichilov clinic, spasticity is treated using various modern methods, one of which is drug therapy with the latest generation of muscle relaxants. Recently, new muscle relaxants have begun to be used for treating spasticity in multiple sclerosis. Specialists at the Top Ichilov Medical Center note the promise of this method. The advantages of muscle relaxant therapy are recognized as their effectiveness in alleviating spasms, ease of use (only for professionals), and the absence of significant side effects.

Muscle relaxants are indicated for:

  • spasticity of the neck and facial muscles (dystonia);
  • blepharospasms (a tic characterized by frequent involuntary blinking);
  • spasticity of the upper limbs (post-stroke condition);
  • spasticity of the lower limbs (due to multiple sclerosis);
  • some other conditions of spasticity.

The medications have a relaxing effect not immediately; the effect is observed 7-12 days after administration and lasts from 3 months to half a year. The procedure needs to be repeated, as the condition of spasticity returns.

Among the side effects, there may occasionally be a mild allergic reaction manifested by skin rashes, possible spread of action to neighboring muscles, and slight redness of the skin at the injection site. Treatment with muscle relaxants is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Warning!

Specialists at the Top Ichilov Medical Center warn: muscle relaxants should only be administered by a trained specialist; they must not be used independently under any circumstances. This can lead to irreversible consequences. The administration of medications is performed in specific areas of the muscles. Incorrect administration or dosage can lead to relaxation of the muscles responsible for breathing.

At the Top Ichilov Medical Center, therapy with muscle relaxants is conducted by experienced and highly qualified specialists, ensuring the safety, effectiveness, and quality of the treatment provided.
