Spontaneous abortion is a condition in which pregnancy is terminated spontaneously; statistically, this occurs in 15% of pregnancies. The main cause of this phenomenon is genetic defects in the embryo. To clear the uterine cavity of remnants of a failed pregnancy, special medications are usually sufficient, but in some cases, a D&C is necessary to avoid bleeding or infection.
D&C is a short surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia and requires hospitalization for one day.
Uterine Cleaning: Stages of the Procedure
Before performing a D&C, it is necessary to ensure that the pregnancy has indeed been terminated. This check is performed using ultrasound, during which the presence of a heartbeat in the embryo is assessed.
Initially, the gynecologist dilates the cervix using
- laminaria sticks (seaweed)
- metal clamps
- a hygroscopic dilator, shaped like a toothpick, which absorbs liquid and gradually expands
In women who have not yet given birth, cervical dilation is done gradually the day before the procedure to avoid injury. Then, the contents of the uterine cavity are suctioned out with a catheter, after which the walls of the uterus are scraped to ensure complete removal of the embryo remnants.
Already 2-3 hours after the D&C, the patient can be discharged from the hospital. In the following days, she may experience mild side effects:
- weakness
- nausea
- light bleeding
- menstrual cramps
To alleviate these unpleasant sensations, pain relievers are taken, and in the case of more severe pain and bleeding – antibiotics.
