The choice of antibacterial agent is based on the medical history and type of pathogen. Generally, broad-spectrum antibiotics from the cephalosporin, carbapenem, and penicillin groups are initially prescribed. If the causative agent is Staphylococcus aureus, the majority of strains of which are resistant to penicillin, bacteriophage preparations based on staphylococcal bacteriophages – viruses capable of selectively targeting staphylococcal bacteria – may be used to combat the bacterial infection.
- Surgery. Active bacterial proliferation in the area of infection leads to bone destruction and adjacent tissue necrosis. In such cases, sanitation is performed – an open surgery to remove necrotic tissues followed by wound closure.
