Treatment of Brain Abscess in Israel Using Modern Medical and Neurosurgical Techniques

The highest professionalism of Israeli neurologists and neurosurgeons, many of whom have many years of experience, actively engage in research work and are recognized in the global medical community, along with the modern material and technical base of clinics, allow for effective treatment of various complex pathologies. This explains the steadily growing popularity of the country in the field of medical tourism. One of the diseases requiring urgent specialized assistance is a brain abscess. Treatment of a brain abscess in Israel follows a comprehensive scheme, personally tailored for each patient. The treatment program includes medication therapy using the latest drugs and progressive methods of neurosurgical operations.

The progression of the pathology causes the development of serious complications, some of which threaten the patient's life, so an adequate course of treatment must be carried out as soon as possible. Accurate diagnosis is necessary to select the most effective therapeutic methods. The high-precision equipment of Israeli diagnostic centers allows for the rapid identification of an abscess, detailed description of its signs, and assessment of the patient's overall condition. As a result of timely treatment, painful symptoms are eliminated in more than 90% of cases, and the prognosis improves. Diagnosis and therapy are conducted in comfortable conditions for the patient, and positive reviews confirm the excellent training and attentiveness of the medical staff and reasonable treatment costs.

Treatment methods for the disease

A brain abscess is relatively rare. The causes of the pathology include open traumatic brain injuries, neurosurgical interventions, as well as the course of purulent inflammatory processes, primarily localized in the head area (sinusitis, otitis). At the initial stage of the disease (inflammatory stage), it may be possible to limit treatment to conservative therapy; after about 5 days, purulent contents accumulate in the abscess cavity, and after 10 days of the pathological process, pus enters the general bloodstream, forming multiple foci.

In most cases, the disease manifests with a characteristic triad of symptoms:

  • general brain manifestations — headache, decreased visual acuity, dizziness, seizures, fainting, bradycardia;
  • general infectious signs — high fever, nausea with vomiting, chills, weakness, sweating, loss of appetite;
  • focal symptoms (develop due to compression of brain structures by the abscess) — symptoms depend on the localization of the abscess; for example, if it is located near the cerebellum, the patient complains of coordination disorders, unsteadiness while walking, and decreased muscle tone.

As the disease progresses, painful symptoms intensify, so treatment should begin as soon as possible. Depending on the stage of the pathology and the overall condition of the patient, different therapeutic methods are applied.

Surgical treatment

  • Stereotactic aspiration — the procedure involves removing the purulent contents of the abscess and subsequently rinsing its cavity with a solution of antibiotics or antiseptic agents using a hollow needle inserted into it. This minimally invasive procedure is performed at the initial (inflammatory) stage of the pathology or when the abscess size does not exceed 3 centimeters. The intervention is performed under local anesthesia, under CT control, and has a minimal risk of damaging healthy brain tissue. The disadvantage of this method is the inability to completely clear the pus, necessitating repeat procedures, which is observed in most patients.
  • Drainage — a method that involves draining the purulent contents of the abscess using a drainage system. The advantage of this technique is the removal of all pus followed by rinsing the pathological focus cavity with saline solution containing antibiotics. Such therapy can last for several days. Since the procedure also does not require damage to brain tissue, the recovery period is very short.
  • Craniotomy (trepanation of the skull) — when the abscess is located in a hard-to-reach place and in several other cases, neurosurgeons have to resort to an open intervention method. A small fragment of the skull bone is removed, the pus-filled capsule is carefully separated and extracted, after which the bone fragment is returned to its place. In neurosurgical clinics in Israel, the operation is performed using innovative neuro-navigation systems, which practically eliminate the risk of damaging healthy tissues.

Medication therapy

  • Antibiotic therapy — the cause of the abscess is pathogenic microorganisms, so antibiotics are used for the complete recovery of the patient. Effective types of antibacterial drugs are selected after microscopic examination and determination of the specific pathogen and its sensitivity to antibiotics. At the early stages of the pathology and when the abscess is located in a hard-to-reach place for surgical removal, antibiotic therapy often serves as the primary treatment method, while it is usually applied in conjunction with surgical removal.
  • Corticosteroids.
  • Anticonvulsants.
  • Nootropic drugs.
  • Diuretics.
  • Vitamin and mineral complexes.

Methods of diagnosing the disease

The diagnostic examination of the patient and the development of a treatment program take, on average, three days in clinics in Israel.

On the day of admission to the clinic, the patient visits the treating neurosurgeon. During the initial consultation, the doctor conducts a neurological examination, thoroughly questions the patient about their complaints, previous traumatic brain injuries, and the presence of chronic inflammatory processes. Necessary examinations are prescribed during the appointment.

Performing the examinations listed in the prescriptions:

  • detailed and biochemical blood tests — determining inflammation indicators: increased white blood cell count and C-reactive protein, elevated ESR;
  • visual methods — computed tomography (CT) is informative only at advanced stages of the disease, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides reliable information even at the early stages of the pathology;
  • craniography (X-ray examination of the skull bones);
  • lumbar puncture with subsequent laboratory examination of cerebrospinal fluid;
  • echoencephalography.

The results of the studies are submitted to a medical council, which includes a neurosurgeon and narrow-profile specialists. The doctors analyze the obtained information, make a diagnosis, and develop a treatment scheme.

How much does treatment of the disease cost

The cost of therapy is among the questions most frequently asked by medical tourists. It is noted that when undergoing treatment in Israeli clinics, foreign patients can save about 30% of the amount required in Western European countries and 50% in the USA.

Advantages of treatment in Israel

  • Qualified experienced neurosurgeons.
  • Availability of modern medical equipment.
  • Professional execution of minimally invasive neurosurgical operations.
  • Use of the latest medications.
  • Reasonable prices.

The prompt provision of adequate therapy ensures the recovery of the majority of patients, while the absence of treatment leads to the inevitable progression of the pathology and the development of serious complications. Do not waste time, contact the clinic, and trust your health to world-class doctors.
