Biological Targeted Cancer Therapy in Israel

Professor Aaron SulkesProfessor Aaron Sulkes

Head of the Oncology Center

In one of the most modern and globally recognized clinics in Israel, the Top Ihilov Medical Center, cancer treatment is conducted using all available, cutting-edge methods. Cancer is the disease of the century, the most frightening illness that causes suffering and threatens the patient's life.

In various countries, cancer patients are considered hopeless cases, and treatment for such patients is carried out using outdated methods that yield minimal results.

5000
foreign patients are treated annually at the Top Ihilov clinic
80%
of surgeries are performed using minimally invasive techniques
1230
procedures using the modern "da Vinci" system

Israel is strikingly different from many countries around the world; here, patients who are deemed "incurable" at home are treated and, importantly, cured. All medical institutions in Israel not only treat cancer patients but also restore health and hope to them. The Top Ihilov clinic has been diagnosing and treating patients suffering from cancer for many years.

One of the modern and effective methods of cancer treatment at the Top Ihilov clinic is the method of biological therapy.

This method is based on the effect of certain medical drugs on cancerous tissues. The drugs are applied based on genetic analysis of the pathological process, when the tumour is just beginning to develop or is in a state of metastasis, and they act on the focus at the cellular level.

Oncologists have discovered protein drugs that create a block in the receptors responsible for receiving signals for the development of the malignant process and triggering the mechanism of malignant transformation of healthy cells. They are called oncological markers.

Individual oncological markers are determined for various types of cancer. Medications intended for the treatment of a specific type of cancer are developed for specific oncological markers. The following drugs are used at the Top Ihilov clinic:

  • "Arbitox" – a drug for the treatment of colorectal neoplasms in advanced, metastatic cancer. "Arbitox" is prescribed if a normal KRASS protein is detected in the patient's tumour cells. In this case, the drug shows effectiveness in more than 70% of patients. Moreover, in 35% of patients, it is possible to reduce the volume of the neoplasm to operable size. If a mutated KRASS is detected in the tumour cells, "Arbitox" is contraindicated, as it does not affect the development of the pathological process. According to statistics, the mutated KRASS occurs in less than 40% of patients suffering from colorectal cancer.
  • "Vemurafenib" - is a drug that blocks the production of the BRAF gene. The BRAF gene is found in 70% of patients suffering from melanoma. In other cases, this mutation is not present. The use of "Vemurafenib" is indicated only in the presence of BRAF; other patients are prescribed the most effective treatment for them.
  • "Herceptin" - effectively acts on breast cancer when the tumour cells release the HER-2 oncological marker. In cases where this oncological marker is not detected, patients are indicated for treatment by other means.
  • "Gefitinib" - the most effective drug for treating adenocarcinomatous lung cancer, used in combination with chemotherapy. The drug is indicated in most cases for non-smoking patients with mutations in the EGFR and ALK proteins.

Biological treatment of malignant diseases is currently the most promising and modern method. It relies on genetic research and tumor analysis. At the Top Ihilov clinic, testing for oncological markers is part of the mandatory diagnostic examination program for patients. This method provides wide opportunities for treating patients according to an individual scheme, significantly increasing positive outcomes.
