What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
The carpal tunnel (from the Latin carpus – wrist) contains the median nerve as well as the tendons of the finger flexor muscles, and is shaped like a tunnel formed on one side by the wrist bones and on the other by the transverse carpal ligament.
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the structures passing through it are compressed, resulting in paresthesias (the so-called "pins and needles") and numbness in the fingers. Symptoms worsen at night.
As the disease progresses and without treatment, problems with holding objects in the hand may arise, and the functionality of the hand (or both hands, in the case of bilateral involvement) decreases. In particularly advanced and severe cases, signs of atrophy and ulcers may appear on the hands.
This situation is caused by inflammation of the tendons, leading to swelling and, consequently, compression of the structures in the tunnel, causing all the aforementioned symptoms. Inflammation can result from infectious or non-infectious causes, overuse of the hand, or working in an uncomfortable position.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is most commonly seen in athletes (tennis players, hockey players, etc.), musicians (violinists), and others.
Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome at the Top Ihilov Clinic
In addition to having modern equipment and professional doctors, the best treatment outcomes at the Top Ihilov Clinic are facilitated by:
- Comprehensive individualized approach to the patient
- Aiming to reduce the negative impact of surgery by using endoscopic and microsurgical techniques
- Conservative and rehabilitative therapy (intra-articular injections, exercises, physiotherapy, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and immobilization of the hand at night with a splint).
If there is no positive effect from the therapy, minimally invasive surgical intervention is performed.
Surgical operations for carpal tunnel syndrome are performed under local anesthesia using endoscopic techniques, which reduces the duration of the rehabilitation period and the possibility of postoperative complications.
Diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome
Top Ihilov specialists, in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome, in addition to clinical examination, use electromyography stimulation – a method that allows for the examination of the conduction characteristics of electrical impulses along the median nerve. MRI and X-rays of the wrist are also performed if necessary.
