Cesarean Section in Israel: safe and high-tech childbirthAfter the procedure, doctors provide effective therapy aimed at restoring gastrointestinal function, preventing infections, and alleviating postoperative pain syndrome. Thousands of healthy babies owe their birth to the skilled hands of Israeli surgeons and obstetricians.

At Top Ichilov Clinic — one of the largest public medical centers in Israel, many women from various countries come annually for cesarean sections. The clinic's specialists provide them with all necessary medical services and care for their health as if it were their own.

Indications for the Procedure

Globally, the demand for this procedure is constantly increasing. From 2003 to 2018, the number of cesarean sections performed worldwide doubled, rising to 21%. This number increases by 4% each year. In approximately 50 different countries, at least one in three mothers undergoes this procedure.

Cesarean section helps preserve the health of both the mother and the child, prevent complications typical of natural childbirth, protect the vagina from stretching, and minimize the risk of hemorrhoids and pelvic organ prolapse.

Cesarean sections at Ichilov are performed on a planned or emergency basis when there is a risk to the life and health of the woman or child during natural childbirth. Women with breech presentation, anatomically narrow pelvis, mechanical obstacles preventing childbirth (fibroids, other neoplasms), multiple pregnancies, or a large baby (over four kilograms) come to Israel for cesarean sections. The procedure is also performed in cases of genital herpes infection and in the presence of diseases incompatible with the stress experienced by the woman during childbirth (cardiovascular diseases, retinal detachment, etc.). There are several other indications for which planned or emergency cesarean sections may be performed.

Features of the Procedure

Cesarean Section in Israel: safe and high-tech childbirthThe procedure is performed without general anesthesia — spinal or epidural (regional) anesthesia is used, which blocks the transmission of nerve signals through the spinal cord. Regional anesthesia has several advantages — in particular, it allows the mother to remain conscious and hold the baby immediately after it is extracted from the uterus and is free from the risks associated with general anesthesia. This type of pain relief is used in 95% of cesarean sections.

During anesthesia, the doctor injects medications through a long needle or catheter between two vertebrae in the area where the spinal cord is located, causing loss of pain sensitivity and muscle relaxation. This method of anesthesia is completely safe and reliably blocks the transmission of pain signals from the nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain.

Before the intervention, a catheter is inserted into the urethra to prevent a full bladder from compressing the uterus. The specialist makes a horizontal incision in the abdominal wall, passes the instrument through the muscle tissues to the uterus, and performs an incision of the amniotic sac. If the woman has previously undergone a cesarean section, the incision is made along the old scar — for aesthetic reasons. Other types of incisions may also be performed — in particular, a midline vertical incision (usually used if the procedure is performed on an emergency basis).

The doctor extracts the baby, cuts the umbilical cord, and removes the placenta. The incision in the uterus and abdominal wall is sutured or secured with staples, after which the mother can place the baby to her breast. The entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes. If necessary, a drain may be left in the muscle tissues of the mother after the incision, which is removed a few days after the procedure. A few days later, stitches or staples are removed.

Immediately after the procedure, the woman is transferred for observation. To stimulate uterine contractions and stop bleeding, an ice pack is placed on the patient's abdomen. To alleviate pain syndrome, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications are prescribed. The list of medications taken by the patient also includes drugs to normalize gastrointestinal function and agents that induce uterine contractions.

Some babies born via cesarean section may experience breathing problems in the first few hours, so the baby may be kept in the neonatal unit for observation for one to two hours.

To prevent the risk of infection for the patient, broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed. Often, antibiotics are administered even before the procedure to eliminate the possibility of infections at the preparatory stage. Women who have undergone cesarean sections in Israel are advised not to lift heavy objects for the first two weeks after the procedure.

Reviews of cesarean sections in Israel, found on numerous online platforms dedicated to childbirth and motherhood, unequivocally indicate the high quality and safety of this procedure. Israeli specialists have gained immense experience in this regard, performing the operation in a way that maximally protects both the child and the mother.

How Much Does a Cesarean Section Cost in Israel

Regarding the question of cost, cesarean sections in Israel are accessible to a wide range of patients. The price of a cesarean section in Israel is lower than in hospitals in the United States or Western European countries by at least 30-45%. Considering the high quality and safety of this procedure, it is easy to see why the flow of foreign patients coming to Israeli clinics continues to increase year by year.

Israeli medicine strives to make quality and modern procedures as accessible as possible, which is why both private and public hospitals set their prices for foreign citizens lower than the average in Europe. Women from leading EU countries, the USA, Russia, Ukraine, and many other countries travel to Israeli clinics to benefit from the help of qualified surgeons and obstetricians.
