A well-functioning immune system detects and eliminates factors that pose a threat to the human body. When the hematopoietic or immune system fails to perform its function, diseases that pose a life risk begin to develop in the body, or the body becomes vulnerable to attacks from both outside (bacteria and viruses) and inside (cancer, autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases).
In many cases, stem cell transplantation through myeloablative bone marrow transplantation (BMT), reduced-intensity conditioning transplantation (RIC), or non-myeloablative stem cell transplantation (NST) may be the only possible treatment method.
The goal of such treatment is to create a competent immune system in the patient that will be able to destroy the disease the patient is suffering from. Below are described all the mentioned medical technologies (BMT, RIC, NST, as well as dendritic cell-based vaccines).
