Israel has developed an effective cancer treatment
In Israel, all areas of pediatrics (pediatric oncology, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric urology, and nephrology) are priorities, so it is not surprising that Israeli doctors have accumulated unprecedented clinical experience in treating childhood diseases.
Nephroblastoma (Wilms tumor) is a pediatric oncological disease, one of the types of kidney cancer. Typically, nephroblastoma appears in children aged 2-3, at most 6 years.
This disease is quite common, especially in children with developmental delays, and is usually associated with other congenital diseases, such as aniridia (absence of the iris), urinary system disorders, and others. The disease affects both girls and boys equally.
The doctors at Ichilov Top have accumulated enormous clinical experience in treating this disease. Advanced methods such as various types of ablation, laser, etc., are used for nephroblastoma therapy in our medical center.
Treatment methods for Wilms tumor in Israel
Due to the characteristics of the developing child's body, its unstable physical and hormonal state, the treatment of pediatric diseases requires special qualifications, which unfortunately do not reach the necessary level in many clinics in the former CIS countries.
The method of treating nephroblastoma depends on the child's age and the stage of tumor development. The younger the child and the earlier the stage, the more effective and faster the treatment.
There are five main stages of Wilms tumor:
- The tumor is confined to the kidney.
- The tumor metastasizes beyond the kidney capsule.
- The tumor extends beyond the capsule but without metastases.
- There are metastases in the liver, lungs, and bones.
- Bilateral nephroblastoma.
In each case, the treatment program is developed individually by specialists at Top Ichilov. Typically, the first step involves the removal of the cancer-affected kidney and metastases. After the removal of one kidney, the other takes over its function.
The surgery to remove nephroblastoma, like surgeries to remove other malignant kidney tumors, can be performed using modern minimally invasive methods, alternatives to traditional open surgery, such as:
- Laparoscopic removal of the tumor through small incisions no larger than 1.5 cm.
- Radiofrequency ablation using an electrode brought to the tumor through a catheter.
- Cryoablation – freezing cancer-affected tissues with nitrogen.
- Laser vaporization or ultra-precise burning of the tumor using a laser.
It is also possible to conduct two or more sessions of radiation therapy, one before surgery to stop tumor growth, and others after surgery to prevent recurrences. In cases where surgery is contraindicated, oncologists at Top Ichilov use radiation therapy as a substitute, often in combination with chemotherapy. The Top Ichilov clinic provides round-the-clock monitoring of the child's condition, and in case of recurrence, procedures are repeated. Treatment of Wilms tumor in Israel receives positive feedback, as high effectiveness of the therapy is ensured and everything possible is done to make young patients feel comfortable.

Diagnosis of Wilms tumor in Israel
Wilms tumor can often be detected by simple palpation of the abdomen. Typically, the formation is localized closer to the left or right side, and in late stages, there is an increase in the abdomen on that side. Bilateral nephroblastoma, meaning tumors in both kidneys, is extremely rare. Otherwise, nephroblastoma can develop without any symptoms. In children aged 5-6, it is almost impossible to palpate the tumor; it is only found after tests reveal blood in the urine. At this stage, the disease manifests with side or abdominal pain, fever, and sometimes elevated blood pressure.
To diagnose nephroblastoma, the Top Ichilov clinic conducts the following modern examinations:
- Blood and urine tests.
- Chest X-ray.
- Ultrasound of the chest organs.
- Computed tomography (CT).
- Positron emission tomography (PET).
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
- Biopsy with subsequent laboratory analysis.
- A thorough examination of the liver, perirenal lymph nodes, and lungs for the presence of metastases.
