Treatment of Heart Diseases in Israel

Patent Ductus Arteriosus: Treatment Options at the Top Ichilov Medical Center
Treatment of congenital heart defects at the Top Ichilov clinic is carried out using conservative and surgical methods. In the latter case, preference is given to gentle surgeries, after which patients recover much faster.
- Based on the diagnosis, the patient may undergo medication treatment, which involves taking indomethacin. Indomethacin blocks the production of prostaglandins and promotes relaxation of the ductal musculature. The action of the drug contributes to the collapse of the artery walls, subsequently closing the duct. After treatment, the heart's proper functioning is restored, and symptoms of insufficiency disappear;
- Surgical treatment is performed with the aim of ligating or suturing the patent ductus arteriosus. The surgery is carried out using minimally invasive methods: endoscopic intervention or endovascular surgery. Due to its minimally invasive nature, the surgery is easily tolerated by children and adults, and the heart's function is immediately restored to normal. Surgical treatment of heart defects today is the most effective and safe.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus: Diagnosis of Heart Defects at the Top Ichilov Medical Center
The patent ductus arteriosus (patent Botallo duct) is a common congenital heart defect that requires urgent treatment. In a normally developing fetus, the ductus arteriosus closes a few hours after the onset of independent breathing. If closure does not occur, the child lives with the defect, during which blood supply is disrupted, the "left heart" enlarges, and arterial blood is shunted from the aorta to the pulmonary artery. This pathology threatens the patient's life and significantly shortens it.

The symptoms are quite general; only adult patients or teenagers can describe their feelings, while in small children, the diagnosis is based on examination results. Most often, patients complain of: weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath with the slightest exertion. Patients exhibit pallor of the facial skin, often cyanosis of the nasolabial triangle and fingertips, and are prone to colds and pneumonia. Teenagers may experience delays in physical development and difficulties in assimilating the school curriculum.
At Top Ichilov, the following diagnostic measures are conducted to detect a patent ductus arteriosus:
- Chest X-ray: reveals an enlarged heart, changes in lung tissue;
- Electrocardiography: determines enhanced function of the right atrium and ventricle, changes in contractile function;
- Echocardiography: determines the boundaries of the heart, objectively – enlargement of the left heart;
- Doppler echocardiography: observes reverse blood flow in the aorta, increased blood volume;
- Catheterization of the aorta, pulmonary artery: direct manometry and aortography are performed.
Thanks to the examination results, all aspects of the defect, the severity of changes, and the degree of body weakening are determined. Heart defects require thorough diagnosis, which allows for the selection of the most effective treatment method.
