Ductal Carcinoma in Situ: Non-invasive Breast Cancer

Treatment of ductal carcinoma in situ must be extremely careful: despite the seemingly "innocent" nature of this tumor, it should not be forgotten that it is prone to recurrence, and already in an invasive form. At the Top Ichilov Clinic, experienced specialists treat ductal breast cancer, using all their knowledge and skills to give the tumor no chance.

Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (ductal cancer, DCIS) is the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer. Many doctors claim that ductal carcinoma in situ is safe for women's health since the tumor does not spread to healthy breast tissue. Israeli specialists disagree with such a statement. Firstly, carcinoma in situ can transition to an invasive form; secondly, inadequately treated ductal cancer increases the risk of recurrence of the disease, but already in its aggressive form. Specialists at the Top Ichilov Clinic have effectively treated DCIS for many years. Comprehensive treatment and an individualized approach to each patient are the keys to the low recurrence rate of breast cancer among patients at the Top Ichilov Medical Center.

Treatment of Ductal Breast Cancer in Israel

Ductal Carcinoma in SituDuctal Carcinoma in Situ is often referred to as pre-cancer, so receiving treatment from an incompetent doctor who is unaware of the high risk of disease recurrence and believes that the tumor can simply be removed and forgotten about is deadly. In Israel, at the Top Ichilov Medical Center, doctors exclusively practice comprehensive therapy aimed at the complete removal of all cancer cells and reducing the risk of tumor recurrence in the future. Comprehensive treatment consists of the following procedures:

  • Surgical excision of the neoplasm — lumpectomy. The clinic's surgeons adhere to international standards for this operation: the margins of the tumor removed from the breast must be "clean," meaning they should not contain cancer cells. Thus, by capturing some healthy tissue, doctors prevent cancer cells from "hiding" in the breast and beginning to develop.
  • Radiation therapy. According to Israeli doctors, postoperative radiation therapy should be performed as a matter of course, as radiation allows for the destruction of atypical cells if they remain after surgery.
  • Hormonal therapy. This is conducted if DCIS is a hormone-dependent tumor.

This approach to treating patients with ductal breast cancer is currently considered the most optimal and is practiced in medically advanced countries such as Israel, Germany, and the USA.

Diagnosis of Ductal Carcinoma in Situ

Diagnosis of ductal breast cancer in Israel is carried out using highly informative and at the same time painless and atraumatic methods for the patient. At the Top Ichilov Clinic, the following diagnostic program is used to confirm the diagnosis of "ductal carcinoma in situ":

  • Mammography, where in the case of ductal breast cancer, the doctor identifies microcalcifications on the mammogram.
  • Fine-needle aspiration biopsy. A small amount of tissue is "suctioned" from the breast using a syringe with a thin needle. After this procedure, the patient is left with no even small scar.
  • Core needle biopsy. A larger diameter needle is inserted through a small incision in the skin of the breast to obtain more tissue. A small scar from the needle insertion disappears within a couple of weeks.
