Chest X-ray examination is an indispensable diagnostic method in a number of cases and allows for the detection of a wide range of pathologies and injuries. At the Top Ihilov center, this diagnostic procedure is performed by experts whose experience and qualifications are confirmed by many years of clinical practice.
Chest X-ray is an examination of the condition of the organs located in the thoracic cavity, as well as the bony and cartilaginous structures of the chest itself. In Israel, this examination is widely used and is often part of routine preventive check-ups – included in the Check-up program.
Today, patients at Top Ihilov have access to a unique digital X-ray diagnostics system, EOS, a completely new and highly informative examination of the entire musculoskeletal system in just one session lasting only 20 seconds.
Methodology of the examination
As with other types of radiological diagnostics, this type of examination uses X-ray radiation. During the examination, the patient receives a radiation dose of about 0.02 millisieverts for a frontal image and 0.08 millisieverts for a lateral image. The total radiation dose received by the patient during X-ray in two projections corresponds to the amount of natural background radiation a person receives over 10 days, making the examination completely safe.

- At the Top Ihilov clinic, digital X-ray systems are used, where the data from the X-ray image obtained from the detector is recorded on a digital medium (previously, photographic films were used for this purpose). In the vast majority of cases, during the X-ray examination, the patient is in a standing position, facing or with their back to the detector (respectively, the projection is called anterior or posterior), as well as sideways (left or right, the projection is called lateral). The standard for diagnostics is an image in two projections – frontal and lateral. Each image contains a two-dimensional representation in one of the planes, allowing for comparison with each other. The doctor mentally constructs a three-dimensional image, which allows for more accurate diagnostics than using an image in only one projection.
- Images in additional projections are used for diagnosing specific pathologies – a supine image is informative for diagnosing pleural effusion, and an image in a curved lordotic projection is used for more detailed examination of the lung apices, etc.
- The production of X-ray images is carried out by a radiologic technician. They instruct the patient on where and how to stand for the image in a specific projection, explain how to behave during the image creation (not to change body positions, possibly hold their breath), and then step behind a protective screen or into another room to operate the X-ray machine (although a single X-ray examination is safe, the technician is near the operating machine all day, so they must follow safety protocols to avoid accumulating a high dose).
- After the X-ray is performed, a specialist interprets the obtained images, noting the characteristics indicative of various diseases. For example, dark areas in the lungs may indicate the presence of benign or malignant neoplasms, tuberculosis, pneumonia, etc. Our specialists use X-rays to identify asbestosis, lung fibrosis, sarcoidosis, vasculitis, alveolar carcinoma, and to determine metastases.
- Today, patients in Israeli clinics also have access to a completely new type of digital X-ray, EOS. Such systems are installed in only a few dozen countries worldwide and allow for a complete image of the spine and lower extremities with an extremely low radiation dose, which is several times less than the total radiation dose received by the patient during a standard X-ray examination. In Israel, these systems are widely used in pediatrics for diagnosing scoliosis.
Chest X-ray in Israel – prices
The affordability of chest X-ray costs in Israel is evidenced by the reviews of foreign patients. Our patients who have undergone this type of diagnostics speak of accessible prices even for the unique EOS method.
The cost of chest X-ray in Israel is 25-35% lower than that of similar examinations conducted in hospitals in Italy, the UK, Austria, or the USA.
