The blood sugar test or glycated hemoglobin test (A1C test) is a blood test designed to diagnose type 1 or type 2 diabetes and determine whether diabetes treatment is effective. It is also commonly referred to as glycosylated hemoglobin, glycated hemoglobin, or HbA1c.
The results of the blood sugar test show the average sugar level of the patient over the last 2-3 months, primarily measuring what percentage of hemoglobin in the blood (the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen) is bound to sugar (glycated).
