There are three types of skin biopsy:

• Shave biopsy, which uses a tool similar to a razor. It takes a sample of the upper layers of the skin (epidermis and dermis).
• Punch biopsy, which uses a round, hollow instrument to take samples from deeper layers (epidermis, dermis, and superficial fat).
• Excisional biopsy, where a scalpel is used to take a sample from the full depth of the cancer-affected skin, including part of healthy skin and healthy subcutaneous fat.

All these procedures are performed under local anesthesia.
