Kidney Biopsy

Kidney tissue biopsy at our clinic is performed under ultrasound guidance. This method is most effective for examining:

  • changes in the organ's tissues due to various kidney pathologies;
  • the condition of tissues affected by malignant cells in kidney oncology;
  • the condition of the implanted organ.

A kidney biopsy is indicated when blood, urine tests, or imaging studies do not provide enough information to diagnose the problem (for example, kidney cancer). Kidney biopsy is also used to determine the stage of kidney disease and the effectiveness of treatment methods. For instance, a kidney biopsy is performed if a kidney transplant has been done and the transplant is not functioning as expected.

In most cases, a kidney biopsy is performed using a thin needle inserted through the skin (percutaneous method) under the guidance of imaging equipment that helps direct the needle and obtain a sample. Depending on the disease and the individual characteristics of the patient, a kidney biopsy may be performed during ureteroscopy (in cases of kidney stones, pregnancy, or transplanted kidney) or transyareal method (for patients with bleeding disorders and endocrine system pathologies).

The kidney biopsy procedure at the Top Ichilov clinic is scheduled considering the individual tolerances of the patient – analgesics and other medications used during the procedure. The biopsy is performed with minimal pain and a low risk of complications. Thanks to the use of the latest equipment, we obtain the most accurate results of kidney tissue biopsies in the shortest time.
