Thyroid Biopsy

Indications for Thyroid Biopsy

The need for diagnosing various processes occurring in the thyroid gland (cancer, nodules, cysts). The tissues obtained through biopsy are subsequently examined in a cytological laboratory under a microscope to detect malignant cells in the tissues. The contents of cysts are also examined.

It is worth noting that thyroid biopsy is the only correct method for diagnosing cancer processes in this organ.

Methods of Conducting the Study

There are two methods for performing a thyroid biopsy:

  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy. This is the most common method. A sample of tissue or cyst contents is taken under ultrasound control using a long special needle.
  • Surgical biopsy method. When it is impossible to perform an aspiration biopsy of the thyroid tissues, the surgical method of obtaining a biopsy is resorted to. In this case, the surgeon removes part or all of the thyroid gland. This method of biopsy is most often used when there is suspicion of follicular thyroid cancer. The surgeon removes a portion of the tissue that contains the nodule, and the diagnosis is confirmed after cytological examination.

Aspiration biopsy can also be used to study the contents of thyroid cysts. Typically, in malignant or benign cases, the contents of the cysts are hemorrhagic, reddish-brown in color, and may contain inclusions from destroyed thyroid cells. Congenital thyroid cysts contain a yellowish, almost transparent liquid.

It should also be noted that thyroid biopsy can be performed not only for diagnostic purposes. It allows for obtaining a sample of gland tissue or the contents of a nodule or cyst. Aspiration biopsy using a long hollow needle allows for aspiration procedures in the cavity of the thyroid cyst. When indicated, special sclerosing agents are introduced into the drained cavity of the cystic sac. Practice has shown that approximately half of the thyroid cysts decrease in size after drainage and do not return to their original dimensions, ceasing to accumulate contents.

The diagnostic doctors at Top Ichilov clinic are happy to provide comprehensive assistance in conducting competent thyroid biopsy. Their extensive practical experience, genuine desire to help, skills, and abilities will allow for the rapid diagnosis of processes in the thyroid gland to determine the exact therapy protocol.
