Professor Moshe (Ervin) SantoHead of the Institute for the Treatment of Digestive System and Liver Diseases
At the Top Ichilov Medical Center, patients with symptoms indicating dysfunction of any digestive tract sphincter can undergo the most accurate and informative examination, which includes the following procedures:
- Endoscopic examination of sphincters;
- Endoscopic manometry of the Oddi sphincter;
- Esophageal manometry;
- Hepatobiliary scintigraphy.
Diagnosis of various gastroenterological diseases in Israel is conducted according to the standards accepted in all developed countries. Every year, thousands of patients from Russia, Ukraine, and the former CIS countries come to the Top Ichilov clinic, where they are guaranteed high-quality diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
Methods for Diagnosing Digestive Tract Sphincters
Sphincters (muscle valves) perform a crucial function in the human body, regulating the physiological transition of contents from one organ to another, for example, from the esophagus to the stomach, from the stomach to the duodenum, and so on. There are 35 sphincters in the digestive tract, and dysfunction of any of them can lead to serious diseases. Investigating the condition of the gastrointestinal sphincters is quite challenging; it requires
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) — an endoscopic examination of several sections of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum), where sphincters most often lose their functionality. Experienced endoscopists, analyzing images of the sphincter obtained with high-resolution video endoscopes and magnification, can detect even minor changes indicating dysfunction of the "valve".
- Endoscopic manometry of the Oddi sphincter — used to assess the condition of the sphincter necessary for normal bile flow from the liver to the duodenum. A special catheter is introduced into the pancreatic or common bile duct via a duodenoscope, allowing direct measurement of pressure in the sphincter and determining its functionality.
- Esophageal manometry. Measuring pressure in the esophagus allows for the diagnosis of dysfunction of the upper or lower esophageal sphincters, determining their patency and muscle tone (increased or decreased).
- Hepatobiliary scintigraphy — a method for studying the liver, bile ducts, and Oddi sphincter using radioactive isotopes.
In addition to the aforementioned invasive methods for examining the digestive tract sphincters, patients at the Top Ichilov clinic are also prescribed non-invasive diagnostic procedures: ultrasound scanning, various laboratory tests and analyses, etc.
Every patient at the Top Ichilov Medical Center can be assured that any endoscopic and other invasive diagnostic procedures necessary for examining the digestive tract sphincters will be performed only by the best doctors in Israel and, of course, with minimal pain and discomfort (under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or in a state of sedative "medicinal" sleep).
