Treatment of Diverticulosis of the Colon in Israel

A diverticulum is a bulging of the walls of hollow organs. A complication of a diverticulum is bleeding that occurs as a result of the inflammatory process. Inflammation and bleeding can occur due to improper treatment or its absence.

Causes

The development of diverticulosis can occur for a number of reasons:

  • dystrophic changes in smooth muscle
  • excessive intraluminal pressure
  • disorders in connective tissue
  • expansion of perivascular spaces due to compression of intramural vessels
  • disorders in the muscle layer, leading to areas with less resistance to excessive pressure within the intestine.

Symptoms of Colon Diverticulosis

The most common symptoms of diverticulosis are pain in the left side of the abdomen, rumbling, constipation, and bloating. The disease affects the psycho-emotional state of a person – symptoms such as irritability, depressed mood, and rapid fatigue are possible. These conditions may occur due to the accumulation of undigested food in the diverticula, leading to its decay and intoxication of the body. Very often, patients register an elevated temperature due to general intoxication.

Diagnosis of Colon Diverticulosis in Israel

At the first stage, a doctor in Israel conducts an interview with the patient regarding existing symptoms, followed by a physical examination with palpation to identify painful areas. In diverticulosis, pain is usually localized in the left side – iliac or mesogastric. If irritation of the peritoneum is detected, a conclusion about perforation of the diverticulum is made. If bloating and asymmetry of the abdomen are determined, a conclusion about intestinal obstruction is made. Instrumental methods used include irrigoscopy, radiography, and in rare cases, endoscopic examination.

Treatment of Colon Diverticulosis in Israel

In Israel, both medication and surgical treatment are used for diverticulosis. Conservative treatment aims to eliminate symptoms and normalize intestinal function. An important condition for treatment is dietary therapy. Surgery is only indicated in cases of life-threatening conditions for the patient. The diet for patients with diverticulosis excludes foods that cause bloating, especially plant-based foods such as legumes, watermelons, and grapes. It is also not recommended to consume food consisting of coarse fibers.
