Advantages of Thyroid Treatment in Israel

  • Preservation of the thyroid gland. A wide range of conservative procedures and organ-preserving minimally invasive surgeries are performed to preserve the gland and all its functions. The preservation rate of the gland in Israel is the highest in the world.
  • Highest quality medications. Only high-quality medications approved by the Israeli Ministry of Health and subjected to thorough and lengthy clinical trials are used.
  • Latest treatment methods. In Israeli clinics, techniques rarely or almost never used even in leading clinics in the CIS are standard, such as radical removal of the thyroid gland using the Da Vinci robotic surgical system, which makes the surgery completely safe and reduces the risk of complications to zero. It is worth noting that the primary goal of doctors is to preserve the thyroid gland and its functions as much as possible.

Thyroid Surgery at Top Ihilov

Who is indicated for thyroid surgery?

Thyroid TreatmentSurgical intervention is applied for the following categories of patients:

  • patients with diagnosed thyroid cancer;
  • patients with confirmed nodular neoplasms that may become malignant;
  • patients with confirmed rapid enlargement of nodules;
  • patients with breathing and swallowing problems due to enlarged thyroid gland.

How is surgery performed for thyroid cancer?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Initially, the surgeon makes a small horizontal incision on the front of the neck, providing access to the lobes of the thyroid gland. The removed tumour or lobe is sent for examination, so it can be determined during the surgery whether it is benign or malignant.

The extent of the surgery depends on the degree of organ damage

Removed thyroid tissues are sent for histological examination. After the surgery, the patient is monitored by a physician for some time. After receiving the results of the histological examination, hormonal treatment is prescribed to the patient.

Types of thyroid surgeries

  • Hemistrumectomy – a gentle surgery to remove one lobe of the gland.
  • Bilateral subtotal strumectomy (in the presence of benign cysts in both lobes of the gland). To prevent gland hypofunction after such surgery, the patient is prescribed thyroid hormones.
  • Subtotal thyroidectomy partial removal of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroidectomy – complete removal of the thyroid gland.
  • Radical removal of the thyroid gland using the Da Vinci robot.

Diagnosis of Thyroid Diseases at Top Ihilov – One Hundred Percent Accuracy

Patients with thyroid diseases undergo a series of examinations aimed at studying the functions and structure of the thyroid gland, as well as selecting the most appropriate method of surgical intervention.

First Day – Consultation

Immediately after the patient's arrival, they are directed for a consultation with a leading otolaryngologist or endocrinologist, an internationally recognized specialist in the treatment of thyroid diseases. The doctor examines the patient, reviews the results of any tests brought, if available, and develops a diagnostic plan.

Second-Third Days – Diagnosis

Typically, the doctor directs patients for the following examinations:
  • Complete blood count, biochemistry, and coagulation;
  • Thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4);
  • Kidney and liver function tests;
  • Ultrasound of the thyroid gland and/or mapping;
  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) – a sample taken with a special thin needle is sent for examination in a cytology laboratory, where it is determined with high accuracy whether the tumour is benign or malignant and whether there is an inflammatory process;
  • X-ray and ECG (for elderly patients);
  • Radionuclide scanning shows the presence of a “cold” nodule, with unchanged levels of T3, T4, and TSH.

Before surgery, it is also necessary to consult with the doctor about which medications to stop taking.

Fourth Day – Treatment Plan

The program of individual comprehensive treatment is developed jointly by several leading specialists, otolaryngologists, endocrinologists, and ENT surgeons, who form an expert group specifically for each patient.
