Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Treatment Methods at the Top Ichilov Medical Center

Since the condition causes severe suffering, the first priority is to alleviate the pain syndrome. Medications prescribed include: analgesics, anticonvulsants, antispasmodics, local surface anesthesia, neuroleptics, and general strengthening therapy.

Good treatment results are observed with physiotherapy, reflex therapy, and manual therapy. If there is no improvement, surgical treatment is indicated.

The goal of the surgery is to relieve the nerve from the irritating factor: widening the jugular foramen or decompressing the nerve at the exit from the brainstem, among other methods. If the irritating cause is a bony spur, it is resected. The surgical intervention is minimally invasive, with access to the operative area provided through micro-incisions. Microsurgical instruments and endoscopic equipment are used. The minimally invasive nature of the surgery ensures the least impact on patients, allowing for quick recovery.

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Diagnostics at the Top Ichilov Medical Center

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is characterized by acute pain syndrome, with pain that is pulsating, exhausting, and causes significant suffering to the patient. The pain syndrome radiates to the root of the tongue, tonsils, and face.

Causes of the disease may include: nerve compression, tumor formations near the nerve, infections, narrowing of the jugular foramen of the skull, altered stylohyoid ligament, enlargement of the bony spur, and much more.

To differentiate the disease from similar pathologies, the patient undergoes special diagnostics:

1. Orthopantomography. This is a radiological examination of the upper and lower jaws. A panoramic image allows for the identification of changes in the bony spur, changes in the occipital bone, and defects in the stylohyoid ligament.
2. CT.
3. MRI.
4. Electroneuromyography. A research method that determines nerve conductivity and impulse changes.
