Eye injuries, when considering the individual ways of eye damage, can be conditionally divided into: blunt object injury (i.e., contusion), open eye wound (which can be penetrating or non-penetrating), chemical and thermal burns. Eye injuries are most often sustained in the workplace, at home, and during military service.

Causes

Eye injuries can be caused mechanically: either by the entry of a foreign object or by impact; they can be caused by chemical agents, such as acid or alkaline burns; or by sharp temperature changes, burns, and frostbite. Causes may also lie in exposure to ionizing radiation. A combination of different causes is also possible.

Symptoms of Various Eye Injuries

If, after an injury, even the slightest pain is felt, swelling is observed, or the eyeball has taken on a reddish color, there is a significant amount of fluid discharge, light sensitivity has developed, or the clarity of vision has changed, sudden bleeding has started, progressive clouding of the cornea has begun, or there are changes in intraocular pressure, it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately.
