News from Israeli Surgery
Endoscopic surgeries for cochlear implant insertion are currently unique: only 10 such surgeries have been performed worldwide, all of them in Chicago, USA. Now, three more surgeries in this field have been carried out by leading Israeli ENT surgeons.
The surgeries were performed at "Shiba" hospital, but soon they will become a routine procedure in other medical centers in Israel. One of the first clinics planning to adopt the new method is the leading medical center "Top Ichilov," where the best Israeli otolaryngologists and ENT surgeons treat ear diseases.
The use of an endoscope allows for a more precise determination of the electrode insertion site, making the surgery much faster and more effective.
Previously, electrodes were implanted through a hole drilled in the bony wall of the cochlea. This procedure can damage the patient's hearing function. The most modern cochlear implant surgeries are performed through the round window or cochlear window (fenestra cochleae, fenestra rotunda). Since the anatomical structure of the middle ear varies greatly among patients, the view through a microscope is often quite limited, as the microscope provides a view only in a straight line. In contrast, a flexible endoscope allows for observation of all recesses and indentations of the ear cavity.
