Endophthalmitis is a term used to describe severe inflammation of the tissues inside the eye. Inflammation usually occurs due to bacterial infections (for example, caused by Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, gram-negative bacteria) or fungi (for example, Candida, Aspergillus). It is rarely caused by viruses (herpes simplex or shingles) or protozoa (for example, toxocara, toxoplasma).
