Laparotomy in Israel – An Operation with Diagnostic Potential

Laparotomy is a surgical procedure that involves a large incision in the abdominal wall to gain access to the organs of the abdominal cavity. The procedure is performed for the diagnosis or treatment of internal organs. At the Top Ihilov center, experienced specialists with many years of experience carry out such surgical interventions, ensuring that our patients are free from the risk of postoperative complications.

A well-performed laparotomy helps not only to identify difficult-to-diagnose diseases and pathologies but also to provide immediate treatment for them. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic significance of this procedure is hard to overestimate.

Performing Laparotomy at the Top Ihilov Clinic

The first successful laparotomy was performed by Ephraim McDowell in Kentucky in 1809 without anesthesia. Since then, medicine has advanced significantly. Modern surgeons use general anesthesia and high-precision equipment when performing laparotomy.

The laparotomy operation in Israel can be performed for two reasons. Therapeutic laparotomy is carried out for the treatment of a previously diagnosed disease (for example, laparotomy may represent the first stage of surgery to remove a cancer-affected part of the intestine). Diagnostic laparotomy is performed to study the condition of internal organs and is a standard investigation in cases of suspected internal organ injuries that pose a threat to life (usually accompanied by internal bleeding). Additionally, diagnostic laparotomy helps to determine the true cause of a disease when other diagnostic methods fail to lead doctors to a consensus.

The laparotomy operation in Israel may be indicated for patients with abdominal pain of unclear origin, internal organ injuries sustained from road accidents or penetrating wounds. In some cases, laparoscopic examination of internal organs is almost the only method to determine the dynamics of the disease. For example, abnormal growth of endometrial cells in endometriosis is poorly visualized using standard diagnostic methods such as X-ray, computed tomography, and ultrasound. Laparoscopic diagnosis, in this regard, is much more effective. Laparoscopic examination is also used to determine the stages of certain types of cancer and to assess the spread of the oncological process to other organs in the abdominal cavity.

Therapeutic laparotomy can be performed for surgical treatment of diseases of:

  • the gastrointestinal tract;
  • the liver, spleen, pancreas, gallbladder;
  • the bladder;
  • the prostate;
  • the female reproductive organs;
  • the kidneys and abdominal lymph nodes.

During laparotomy, a long incision is made along the so-called white line of the abdomen – a line that symmetrically divides the upper part of the anterior abdominal wall into two parts. After the surgeon makes the laparotomy incision, other types of interventions may be performed – liver resection, splenectomy, surgical intervention on the veins and arteries located in the abdominal cavity, bowel resection, nephrectomy, etc.

At the end of the laparotomy, the organs are returned to their normal anatomical position, and the incision is closed with sutures. After the operation, the patient spends several hours in the intensive care unit, where specialists monitor their condition. Patients can be discharged from the clinic after a few days, but it is advisable to continue monitoring by a doctor for some time to exclude possible complications such as infections, bleeding, the occurrence of pain syndrome, etc.
