Pyloric stenosis is a sharp degeneration (thickening or enlargement) of the muscular layer of the pyloric section of the stomach. The disease is characterized by a delay in the passage of chyme from the stomach, which can worsen to complete obstruction.
Causes
Pyloric stenosis can be:
- Congenital. This developmental defect is characterized by an excess of connective tissue growth in the outlet section of the stomach;
- Acquired. Often, the cause of this disorder is genetic abnormalities. This manifests as a loss of muscle functionality and transformation into dense connective tissue.
In adults, pyloric stenosis may develop due to the following diseases:
- Peptic ulcer disease (ulcer localization in the pyloric section of the stomach);
- Chronic gastritis;
- Pyloroduodenitis, that is, inflammation of the area of the stomach outlet;
- Occurrence of polyps in the intestines;
- Crohn's disease;
- Inflammatory process in the bile ducts.
Diagnosis of Pyloric Stenosis in Israel
The symptoms of the disease gradually increase.
The most characteristic symptoms are:
- In the compensation stage – a feeling of heaviness in the stomach after eating, often nausea after eating, a sensation of difficulty in the transition of chyme from the stomach to the intestine, sour belching. Vomiting brings relief until the next meal;
- In the subcompensation stage (partial pyloric stenosis) – a constant feeling of fullness in the stomach, belching, vomiting occurs very frequently, almost after every meal. Vomiting brings relief to the patient, so they often induce it themselves. This leads to low food intake and significant weight loss;
- In the decompensation stage (complete pyloric stenosis) – vomiting no longer brings relief to the patient, the vomit has a stagnant character, noted for its particular foul odor. There is marked exhaustion of the body, with dry and flabby skin.
At the leading clinic in Israel, Ichilov, the patient will undergo a series of progressive diagnostic procedures to verify the diagnosis of pyloric stenosis:
- General laboratory blood test;
- Contrast radiographic study using barium suspension;
- Fibroesophagogastroscopy.
In addition to taking the medical history, detailed consultations with leading specialists in endocrinology, oncology, and anesthesiology are conducted at the Ichilov clinic.
Treatment of Pyloric Stenosis in Israel
The disease is resolved exclusively through surgical intervention. Before performing the surgical technique, the patient at the Ichilov clinic will undergo preliminary preparation aimed at restoring water-electrolyte and acid-base balance.
At the Ichilov clinic, patients will have access to a choice of surgical techniques for treating pyloric stenosis in Israel:
- Truncal vagotomy with additional gastric drainage. Indicated for compensated pyloric stenosis. This procedure is also possible in the subcompensated phase, but only under the condition of adequate preoperative preparation of the patient;
- Minimally invasive truncal vagotomy with pyloroplasty. Performed using laparoscopic access. This surgical method is only possible for compensated pyloric stenosis.
- Truncal vagotomy with antrectomy. The operation is indicated for patients whose disease is in a subcompensated or decompensated state;
- Hemigastrectomy (stomach resection) is used to treat pyloric stenosis in Israel in patients with decompensated forms of the disease.
